Care Ministry

Christ-Centered Support for Life’s Struggles

At First Baptist Church, Crisis Care is provided through Stephen Ministry, a one-to-one, Christ-centered support system for those facing life’s most difficult seasons. Our trained Stephen Ministers walk alongside individuals experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, caregiving stress, major surgery, or other personal struggles. With empathy, prayer, and confidentiality, they listen and provide encouragement while planting seeds of hope. While we offer care, we trust God—the true Cure Giver—to bring lasting healing and peace to broken and weary hearts.

What is Crisis Care?

Below is a brief synopsis about Crisis Care in the Bible and how it relates to the Stephen Ministry name.

In Acts 6, Stephen was chosen by the Apostles as the first of seven to help minister to the needs of the widows, who had no one to provide for their needs. This allowed the Apostles to continue spreading the lifesaving Gospel. The seven were to be men full of the Spirit and wisdom, and the Apostles prayed and laid their hands on them.

In verse eight we read, “Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Freedmen, who began to argue with Stephen. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke. Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, ‘We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.’ … All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.”

After Stephen boldly recounted the history of Israel’s rejection of God’s prophets and ultimately His Son, he looked up and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God—pleased with Stephen’s obedience. Though Stephen was stoned to death, he became the model of Spirit-filled care, courage, and faithfulness.

Crisis Care follows this biblical example, training and equipping caregivers to come alongside those who are hurting, to pray, listen, and walk with them through their darkest seasons, always pointing to the hope and healing found in Christ.

God seems to love organization. When God began creation, “the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep.” God took chaos and imposed order on it—organizing day and night, the kinds of plants and animals, and more. When Moses was led by the Spirit through the desert, Jethro was sent to help him organize a judicial system. When Jesus began His ministry, He organized the twelve disciples, sending them out in pairs with clear instructions. In the same way, Crisis Care provides a system of trained caregivers who are matched with hurting care receivers, offering Christ-centered support during life’s most difficult seasons.

Crisis Care demonstrates the practical way of how a congregation functions properly. Crisis Care Ministers are caregivers to people who are experiencing painful or conflicting feelings as a result of a life crisis or challenge. They share Christ’s loving care with their care receivers, meeting once a week to listen, pray, and walk with them through their crisis. By setting healthy boundaries at the start, we are able to deliver the best quality care and support for those in need.
